SIBU: The substantial increase in voters in the Nangka constituency is prompting GPS candidate Dr Annuar Rapaee to work hard to convince voters to vote for him.

Speaking at a media conference on Sunday (Dec 5), the two-term assemblyman said when he started contesting in the 2011 election, the number of voters was 14,000, but it increased to 18,000 in the 2016 polls and 23,000 in this 12th Sarawak state election.

"That is why I never take elections for granted. There are a lot of new voters now and I will have to work very hard to convince the first timers," he said.

A cardiologist by profession, Dr Annuar said he would not be complacent either especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr Annuar said people were not keen to come out to vote, and as such, he had to work hard to tell the constituents to exercise their right to vote.

He also disagreed that he could only be seen during election time.

"If people think that I only come out during the election, they are definitely wrong.

"I have been working since the last five years. People know that and I don't have to prove it," he said.

Declaring himself as a "non-politician's politician", Dr Annuar said he would not run down his opponents by telling voters not to vote for them.

"I will not touch my opponents as they have the right to contest. Let's face this election in a very democratic way and let the people decide," he added.
