Lorry drivers need time to follow new rule

JOHOR BARU: More time is needed for trucking operators to fully adapt to Singapore’s new requirement where they have to perform pre-departure Covid-19 tests in Malaysia before crossing the border.

Johor Trucking Association president Novan Hing said the slight traffic congestion on the Causeway into Singapore after 9am yesterday, which was the first day that the republic ceased on-arrival testing, was expected.

“We hope to see significant improvements and a smoother clearance process over the days,” he said yesterday.

Previously, lorry drivers and their assistants entering the republic were required to undergo on-arrival testing at the Singapore side of the Causeway and Second Link, with the cost borne by Singapore.

Under the new regulation, Malaysian lorry drivers and their assistants have to go for tests at an accredited facility every two to three days before entering the republic.

The proposal for the change was made by Malaysia’s International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti), which is the lead agency for Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL)-Land matters.

Hing, who is also Malaysia Trucking Federation vice-president, said it was not surprising for some uninformed lorry drivers being forced to make a U-turn back to Johor Baru for being caught unprepared.

Meanwhile, business owner Ramesh Krishnan, who is also Johor Ports Shipping and Forwarding Association treasurer, said his 15 lorry drivers did not face any hiccups entering Singapore yesterday.

“There was some traffic on the Causeway but it was not a big deal.

“Our drivers have done all the required testing and documentation before making their trips,” he said.
