A Towson University student was among three people wounded in a shooting early Saturday at a gathering on the campus north of Baltimore, an attack police described as an “isolated incident.”

Towson officials said the victims were a female student and two other people not affiliated with the school. The student was treated at a hospital and is recovering. The injuries were described as not life-threatening.

Police said earlier Saturday that the three victims were adults.

The shooting happened about 2?a.m. at Freedom Square, a popular gathering spot for students for both planned and impromptu gatherings in the academic heart of the campus, where 22,000 students are enrolled. This was the first week of classes.

Baltimore County Police Chief Melissa Hyatt told reporters that detectives were investigating at the scene and seeking information from victims at hospitals. No arrest had been made, but Hyatt said: “There is no active threat on campus.”

Hyatt said detectives did not yet know the nature of the dispute.

She indicated in a Tweet that “hundreds of people” attended the gathering at Freedom Square.

However, University president Kim Schatzel said the gathering was not organized or sanctioned by the university or by any Towson student organization.

Sean Welsh, a university spokesman, said officials were not yet sure what type of gathering it was.

Welsh said that after the shooting an alert was sent to students, most of whom live off-campus and commute to classes.

Students were urged to stay away from the scene, and the school said counseling services were being made available.

The Towson campus was quiet Saturday morning. The school’s enrollment consists mostly of commuter students, and even many who do live on campus left Friday or Saturday for the Labor Day weekend.

Maxwell Deluca, a freshman studying computer science, said he was not shocked that a shooting happened on campus.

“I figured it would happen at some point, but not my freshman year, not on my first week on campus.”

Deluca, 18 and from Edgewood, Md., said he was in his dorm overnight and did not go out. He said he heard there had been a large gathering at the square and later learned of the shooting.

The shooting scene at Freedom Square is in a cluster of academic buildings in front of Lecture Hall, with walking the easiest access. Police cars and two white forensic evidence vans were parked on pedestrian paths.

The small square is partially surrounded by a low brick wall with a shade tree as its centerpiece. Circular wooden tables lie around its perimeter.

A small group of detectives, clustered in the square and, going through bushes, continued to gather and examine evidence as daylight emerged.

It appeared that a shoe had been left behind at the scene, but reporters were not allowed close to the square, which was surrounded by crime-scene tape. Two police officers guarded a liquor bottle discarded dozens of yards from the square.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. called the incident “extremely troubling,” adding that “we are committed to keeping all of our residents safe, including those in our university communities.”

By late Saturday afternoon, campus officials said the shooting site had been cleared and that normal campus activities could continue.

Martin Weil contributed to this report.
