Chris Packham is on a mission to create a haven for wildlife across hundreds of acres of ancient woodland amid a climate and biodiversity crisis. The naturalist will spearhead the repair and restoration of Bowyers Wood, a nearly 300-acre plot of land in East Sussex.
It forms part of his new role as chief ecologist of Dale Vince’s Ecotalk, a not-for-dividend mobile phone provider which rewilds Britain through phone bills.

Speaking from the heart of the semi-natural woodland, Mr Packham said: “This lovely green space is Bowyers Wood and Ecotalk are going to be paying for the restoration of this wood. I know when you're looking around you think ‘this is a lovely spot. It’s got to be packed with wildlife’, and indeed we’ve just seen nine species of butterfly in one little patch
“But when I look at this, I think ‘yes it’s good but I know it could be better’. We can restore it, we can repair it. We can re-introduce species here which are otherwise absent. That’s what our plan is for the next few years.”
The woods is already home to woodland birds like blackcap which sing above the broadcaster despite it being late in the season.

Tawny owls, sparrow hawks, flies, beetles and bats also call the woodland home.
But the creatures are in for a boost with bird and bat boxes at the top of Mr Packham’s priority list as part of the restoration.

He said: “This is one of the quickest and easiest fixes. So to boost those populations, we’ll be getting those up this coming autumn.”
A 27-acre enclosure for beavers is also high up on Mr Packham’s list following their re-introduction across the country.
The Springwatch presenter said: “One of the things we’re really keen to add here are beaver.
“We have a licence to explore the opportunity of putting beavers back into this environment. They’re transformative. They will clear out streams. They’ll make their dams, make ponds and marshy areas. They will just add to the richness of this area. So that’s an experiment we’re very keen to explore. We know it’s worked elsewhere. It’s working now all over the UK and we’re definitely excited by that.”
Local communities and neighbours will be at the heart of the project, with the revamp also to be documented online for Britons to be inspired.

Mr Packham said: “We want people to copy this. Some of the ideas we’re going to implement are things people can do in their garden if they’re lucky enough to have one, their school garden or their window box too. This is a great place for wildlife now but it can be even better. In a climate emergency and a biodiversity crisis, we’ve got to do everything we can to improve things and that’s why I’m very, very excited about this project.”
Mr Packham will also be overseeing the restoration of land in Downicary, in Devon.
The previously grazed fields have the potential to become wet meadows full of ponds, bogs and marshes
