New Lenox police remained on the scene Wednesday afternoon of an early morning head-on crash involving a semitractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle.
A teenage driver had to be extricated from his car and was initially transported to Silver Cross Hospital then airlifted to Loyola Medical Center, authorities said. No details were available about his condition.
“We’re all hopeful he’s going to pull through,” New Lenox police Chief Louis Alessandrini said.
The driver of the truck was not injured and has been cooperating with the police investigation, Alessandrini said.
Alessandrini said the teen was driving east on Laraway Road at about 5 a.m. and the semitractor-trailer was traveling west when the crash occurred. The teenager, who is a New Lenox resident, was heading to a sports practice at his school, Alessandrini said.
As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, Laraway Road remained closed from Rachel Ridge to Cedar Avenue and Alessandrini said it would remain closed for another two to three hours.
