Former Morgan State University men’s basketball standout Blake Bozeman was killed in a shooting late Saturday night at a nightclub in the District, according to D.C. police and the university.

Bozeman, 31, the son of the university’s former coach Todd Bozeman, died at the hospital after the incident. Two other men and a woman were wounded in the shooting, police said.

Police said gunfire broke out shortly before midnight inside a club in the 1300 block of H Street NE.

Those injured were being treated Sunday for wounds that were not considered life-threatening, according to police.

“The Morgan family extends our deepest condolences and prayers to the Bozeman family and friends,” university spokesman Larry Jones said in a statement. “Our family was an extension of his and he was a shining example of what it means to be a student-athlete.”

The younger Bozeman played four years, from 2011 to 2015, as a starting guard for the university, Jones said. He ranked second on the school’s all-time minutes leader board (3,717), fourth in games played (123) and third in 3-pointers made (183). He scored at least 20 points five times as a senior, including 25 points against North Carolina A&T that season.

“Bozeman was productive both on the court, in the classroom and took pride in helping out in the community as well,” Jones said. “He was selected to the 2015 Allstate NABC Good Works Team for his significant contributions to the greater good of their communities through volunteerism and civic service. He volunteered at Special Olympics events, refereed soccer games for the mentally challenged, and organized a dance for mentally disabled students.”

The elder Bozeman, head coach at Morgan from 2006 to 2019, was the program’s winningest Division I coach, Jones said.

“This senseless gun violence gotta stop!” Norfolk State University basketball coach Robert Jones posted Sunday on the social media platform X. “Another young man lost. RIP Blake Bozeman and condolences to Coach Todd Bozeman.”

Police are searching for the gunman, who was last seen heading west on H Street. No age estimate was given, and police had no motive to provide.

So far this year, there have been almost 200 homicides in the District, about 30 percent more than last year at this time.

The site of the shooting is toward the eastern end of one of the city’s most prominent dining and entertainment corridors. The block includes a church and the Atlas Performing Arts Center. It is a few blocks northeast of the Capitol Hill neighborhood.
