POLL: Should Spain bring back Golden Visas for Brits? Have you say
2024-04-11 00:00:00.0     每日快报-世界新闻     原网页

Earlier this week, Spain announced plans to scrap the Golden Visa scheme for non-EU nationals wanting to buy property in the country.

Under previous rules, property investors who spent a minimum of £429,000 (€500k) on property were entitled to one of these so-called 'golden visas'.

The policy, which had been in force for more than 10 years, allowed these investors to live in Spain for an intial two year period.

The rules allowed them to renew the permit indefinitely every two years, provided they still owned the property. However, Spain's new socialist prime minister Pedro Sanchez plans on scrapping the scheme for non-EU residents in order to prioritise affordable housing for Spaniards.

Following the shock announcement, Express readers are being asked if the scheme should be brought back for Brits. Let us know your thoughts in the poll below.

On Tuesday, April 9, Mr Sanchez said: "I would like to announce that tomorrow's Council of Ministers is going to study a report presented by the Minister of Housing and the Urban Agenda to modify the law, approved by the People's Party in 2013, which allows you to obtain a residence visa if you invest in housing in our country."

He added: "We are going to take the necessary measures to guarantee that housing is a right and not merely a speculative business."

Spain is not the first to scrap such a scheme, as Portugal already announced it will close its non-habitual resident scheme (NHRS) that rewarded foreign nationals who spent more than six months in the country.

Courts in France earlier this year also blocked efforts to allow Brits to stay in the country for longer than 90 days without a visa.
