Prince Charles and Camilla ‘so proud’ of Emma Raducanu after ‘outstanding’ US Open Final

The Brit shot to victory with a 6-4 6-3 win in the final of the US competition, becoming the first qualifier to ever win a slam. She is the youngest British tennis player to reach the US Open final in the Open era, aged just 18.

Emma Raducanu did not drop a set through three qualifying matches and seven main-draw matches - a feat which has not been achieved since Serena Williams won in 2014 without dropping a set.

Prince Charles and Camilla were quick to praise Emma Raducanu on her victory.

In a post on the Clarence House Twitter account, the couple said: “Congratulations to @EmmaRaducanu on your #USOpen win - what a fantastic achievement!

“We are all so proud. Well done to @LeylahFernandez today too.

“An outstanding match between two inspiring young women - we can’t wait to see where you go next.”

This is Ms Raducanu’s second Major appearance after Wimbledon this year.

She has become the first British woman to win a grand slam singles trophy since 1977, when Virginia Wade won Wimbledon.

She started the tournament ranked at world No 150 and after this win will enter the top 25 of the rankings.

Leylah Fernandez, aged 19, made the match the first-all teen US open Final since 1999.

To reach the final with Raducanu, Fernandez overcame the odds and defeated world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus on Thursday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After her semi-final victory, Fernandez described her time at the US Open as "magical” during the post-match press conference.

It was the first time these two players have played each other in a major final.
