KUALA LUMPUR: Police have recorded the statements of four Opposition MPs in connection with the rally near Dataran Merdeka on Monday (Aug 2).

       The four were Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, Simpang Renggam MP Dr Maszlee Malik, Damansara MP Tony Pua and Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil.

       The MPs had their statements recorded at Dang Wang police headquarters between 10am and noon on Wednesday (Aug 4).

       Pua said he had given full cooperation to the police on the matter.

       "Matters asked included physical distancing and the reason behind the rally.

       "I told police that we did not gather or hold a rally, instead we were prevented from entering Parliament grounds," he told reporters after having his statement recorded.

       Fahmi, when met, said he has also given his full cooperation with the police.

       "So far, there is no need for me to return to give further statements.

       "I respect the police as they are just doing their duties," he told reporters.

       On a separate matter, Fahmi said he has lodged a police report against Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin for allegedly disrespecting the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong during an interview recently.

       Asked about the gathering of ministers and other VIPs at the prime minister's residence on Tuesday (Aug 3) night, Fahmi urged Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah to look into the matter.

       "He should check whether SOPs such as physical distancing were adhered to.

       "As a civil servant, he must be impartial and professional," he said.

       Meanwhile, two other MPs - Muar MP Syed Saddique and Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh - are expected to have their statements recorded at about 2.30pm at the police headquarters.

       Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani had said a total of 206 police reports were lodged on the rally attended by Opposition MPs on Monday.

       Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim had said all individuals, including MPs, who were involved in the rally near Dataran Merdeka on Monday will be called up by the cops to assist investigations.

       "We received information that there will be a gathering on Parliament grounds, but we were informed that Parliament was not in session.

       "Thus, we cordoned off and diverted the roads leading to Parliament as no one was allowed to enter Parliament grounds on Monday," he said.

       Asked whether those involved will be issued compound notices for being involved in the rally, Comm Azmi said police will investigate and the investigation paper will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action.

       "So far, we have already received two police reports on the rally," he said.

       More than 500 police personnel and officers were on duty, he added.

       "In the end, the matter was resolved peacefully and the crowd eventually dispersed," he said.
