KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested 22 people and issued close to 500 summonses in a traffic operation in the city over the weekend.
City Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department deputy chief Supt Zulkafli Chek Lah said the operation was focused on speeding, drunk driving and illegal racing.
"We seized 26 motorcycles for illegal exhaust modifications and issued a total of 463 summonses for various offences.
“The operations at Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Kuching and Duke Highway between Friday and Sunday involved 17 officers and 128 other personnel," he said in a statement on Sunday (June 5).
Supt Zulkafli said the seized motorcycles would be inspected by the Department of Environment and would be ordered to be restored to their original specifications.
"We arrested 12 motorists aged between 23 and 59 for driving under the influence of alcohol. We also arrested a motorcyclist for using a fake number plate, while nine other motorcyclists were arrested for illegal racing and performing dangerous manoeuvres.
“Such operations would be increased to ensure the safety of road users and eradicate illegal racing and other dangerous activities on the roads,” he said.
