A MIND-BENDING apartment block in Spain is said to have inspired the design for the iconic staircase in Netflix hit show Squid Game.

Located in Calpe, Spain, the La Muralla Roja complex bears a striking resemblance to the set design in Squid Game.

It comes as the real-life game show based on Netflix’s most-watched series - Squid Game: The Challenge - premiered on November 22.

La Muralla Roja - translated to The Red Wall - is a fortress-like apartment and is said to be the inspiration behind the creepy stairs on the Squid Game set.

The hypnotic, twisted building plays optical illusions on the eyes as its stark red paint contrasts the blue ocean behind it.

Housing 50 apartments, the mind-bending complex consists of narrow winding stairways that wrap around the columns of the building.

Its Tetris-like appearance makes the post-modern tower look more like something out of a video game than a real-life accommodation that you can now book on Airbnb.

La Muralla Roja features a complicated labyrinth of outdoor staircases, floors, terraces, and tunnels, with each step providing surreal views of vast open waters and surrounding trees.

The apartment has been painted using striking red, blue, and pink paint, similar to the maze-like stairway seen in the thriller Squid Game.

The Squid Game staircase is arguably the most striking architectural space in the show, according to Architizer, and was used to transport competitors to where their deadly challenges were held.

The production team behind the award-winning series had a multi-million dollar budget to create the arena where the contestants would play for their lives, with actor Lee Jung-Jae, who plays Gi-hun, calling the expansive set "almost dreamlike".

The winding qualities and candy-coloured tones display a chilling contrast between the show's playful constructions and the more sinister gameplay behind the scenes.

The geometric stairs play a vital role in the eye-catching La Muralla Roja, but bridges that connect all the apartments together were also added by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill.

Photos of the impressive structure play tricks on the mind as the L and cross-shaped buildings merge to form a staggered design.

Plants have been placed in areas where there are small openings, giving life to the otherwise stony apartment block.

The distinctive building also boasts an outdoor terrace and a fancy rooftop pool.

The rooms' interiors are pretty flashy with rattan furniture, cream curtains, and an array of artworks splashed across the walls.

Squidgame fans will be pleased to know that they can stay in La Muralla Roja via Airbnb and Booking.com.

The beachfront property boasts apartments that include a master bedroom, a living room, a flat-screen TV, and even a fully-equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and oven.

Guests also have access to a bathroom with a walk-in shower, as well as an outdoor patio for al-fresco dining in the Spanish sun.

Renting an apartment in La Murella Roja will set you back around £170 a night but the popular accommodation has received several glistening reviews on Booking.com.

One happy guest wrote: "In person it is even more amazing than I could gather from pictures: the place is extremely quiet and has a magical atmosphere at every time of the day and night: a feast for the eyes and the mind".

Another said: "The architecture of the building is second to none and the views from the apartment on the Penyal d'Ifach are spectacular".

A third added: "Amazing building and good location for relax vacation."
