BATU PAHAT: A chemical spill was reported at Jalan Kluang - Taman Gading here after several containers fell off a lorry.

Operation commander Firdaus Ahmad said that they received an emergency call from the public about a chemical spill in the middle of the road at about 3pm on Wednesday (Jan 24).

"The chemical spill is believed to have happened when the lorry driver made an emergency brake as the vehicle in front of it suddenly stopped.

"This led to several containers filled with chemicals falling off and spilling all over the road," he said when contacted.

Firdaus then added that no injuries were reported and the chemicals have been cleared.

"A total of 19 firemen were deployed to the scene. Also deployed were two fire rapid tender (FRT) vehicles, an Emergency Medical Response Services (EMRS) vehicle, two Rapid Intervention Motorcycles (RIM) and a Triton Utility vehicle from the Penggaram and Larkin stations," he said

"Upon arrival, we found that there was a chemical spill involving four intermediate bulk container (IBC) tanks and four drums of sodium silicate and sufuric acid," added Firdaus.

He said that the firemen and workers from a factory then transferred the chemicals to new IBC tanks with a pump.

"Two personnel from our hazardous material unit also checked on the situation at the scene," he said in a statement earlier.
