Tory MP defends Brexit as he claims France using crisis to belittle UK

Tory MP Lee Andersen branded Brexit "a success" but knew from the outset that the border issue would remain one of its fundamental issues. Mr Andersen also claimed that France is gloating about the UK’s current migrant crisis after they denied British boots access on Calais beaches to prevent immigrants from crossing. One of the reasons the UK voted to quit the EU was to gain total control over immigration and its own borders.

But that has not materalised yet and Mr Anderson said that France are now taking huge pleasure in seeing the UK struggling to deal with the issue.

Tory MP told GB News: “Disappointing? No, not all of Brexit.

“I think it has been a success, it has been what we voted for. The border issue was probably one of the biggest single issues in the Brexit vote.

“People wanted to take back control, control immigration and control our borders. Like I say, for countries like France it’s a bit of a stick to beat us with.

If in 2020 little over 8,000 people made the crossing from France to the UK by boat, there has been a staggering threefold increase in the numbers this year, with one month of the year still to go.

UK officials aim to put an end to ‘dangerous’ and ‘unnecessary’ Channel crossings.

“The British public have had enough of seeing people die in the Channel while ruthless criminal gangs profit from their misery and our New Plan for immigration will fix the broken system which encourages migrants to make this lethal journey.”

For Gerald Darmanin, France's interior minister, the UK is paying the price of its almost unparalleled economic success compared to the rest of Europe.

And he emphasised that the motives so many migrants want to come to the UK, instead of settling down in France or elsewhere in Europe, lies in England being 'too attractive' from a monetary perspective.

Britain currently has an unemployment rate of 4.3 percent compared to France's 8.6.

Darmanin has shed light on why people are reluctant to settle down in France or other European countries and see England as their Holy Grail.

He said that people gathering en masse in Calais and Dunkirk do so because they are "attracted by England, especially the labour market which means you can work in England without any identification", he continued.

"Britain must take its responsibility and limit its economic attractiveness.

"Britain left Europe, but not the world. We need to work seriously on these questions, without being held hostage by domestic British politics."
