Officers opened fire at the suspect in the Bislett part of Oslo, Norway, around 9am local time, police confirmed. A spokesman for the force confirmed that a police officer had been injured in the incident but not critically.

"We do not rule out any motives, but there is currently no information in the case that indicates that it is a terrorist incident," senior Police Chief Egil Joergen Brekke said.

Video footage, which has since gone viral on social media, showed a man appearing to carry a knife when he was hit by the vehicle.

Torgeir Brenden, the head of operations at Norway's Police, revealed that the suspect was about to stab a person when the police car hit him.

He added: "He was about to attack people on the street when the police came and had it stopped.

"Two people were involved, and the police take care of them as best they can."

He said that no one else was injured in the attack, adding: "We can imagine that he intended to attack more."

It is not yet known what the suspect's motive was.

A witness to the shooting told Norwegian publication VG how they ended up in the "middle" of the incident.

She said: "I woke up when a lady screamed and thought someone was hit, then I saw a man without a top on with a knife running down the street.

"The police were not far behind, and tried to run over him, and they drove quite hard into the wall.

"When the door opened, he almost goes crazy at the policeman in the car, then he started kicking for life. Then I heard shots."

According to local media, more police cars quickly arrived after at least six shots were fired.

Witnesses saw the injured man being taken away in an ambulance.

The injured policeman was also picked up and taken away for medical attention, it was reported.

As news of the incident spread, the road it took place on was closed off while police carried out further investigations.

The police ombudsman - Norway's equivalent of the UK’s Independent Office for Police Conduct - has been informed and is carrying out an investigation.

Norway's Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl has also been informed, according to local publication NTB.

The latest attack comes just weeks after a man killed five people with a bow and arrow in the Norwegian city Kongsberg.

Police said they had previously been in contact with him over fears of radicalisation after he converted to Islam.

Espen Andersen Braathen has since been charged with murdering five people in a bow and arrow attack.
