A SUSPECTED tornado has hit homes and cars as thunderstorms and flash floods continue to hammer Britain.

       Shocking images show damaged roofs and windows as well as vehicles flipped over in Humberston, Lincolnshire.

       More than 20 houses are believed to have been damaged as utility and council workers rushed to the scene alongside emergency services.

       Some areas are cordoned off.

       One motorhome is on its side in Buttermere Crescent, which appears to

       have taken the brunt of the damage.

       Meanwhile, flood warnings have been issued as up to TWO INCHES of rain is set to hammer Britain today and thunderstorms are expected to last all week.

       After a warm weekend, Brits started the week with wind and rain, marking the beginning of autumn weather.

       According to the Met Office, up to 60mm rain is set to batter the UK today while drier weather will spread from the west later in the day.

       Blustery conditions are expected in the UK mainly in the west after the last weekend of sunshine saw temperatures reaching 25C.

       Forecasters predict scattered showers in the west and south tonight while it will be windy with some strong gusts, particularly in the northwest.

       The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain across some parts of Scotland.

       A flood alert has also been issued for Aberdeenshire, Findhorn Nairn Moray, and Speyside as heavy rain has affected the areas.

       Meanwhile, a flooding alert is currently in place in Stoke Trent after heavy rainfall caused the river levels to rise while further rainfall is expected to follow.

       The flooding is affecting areas adjacent to the River Trent between Norton Green and Darlaston including Stoke on Trent, Lyme Brook between Newcastle under Lyme and Hanford, Fowlea Brook at Stoke on Trent and Ford Green Brook.

       The Met Office urges locals to avoid low-lying footpaths and bridges near local watercourses.

       "Unsettled" conditions will continue tomorrow with hail and thunder across the country after a largely dry start.

       Forecasters predict a "mixture of sunshine and blustery showers" with the showers merging into heavy rain across central and southern areas.

       Similar weather is expected for the rest of the week with some hail and thunder at times and temperatures being slightly below average.

       According to the Met's long-range forecast, the "cyclonic pattern will likely last into October, bringing largely unsettled condition across the UK with a very general northwest to southeast split."

       Despite the gloomy weather, the Met Office said mid-October could bring "a chance of settled conditions becoming more prevalent across most of the UK for a time".

       From October 10, forecasters said temperatures are more likely to be around or slightly above average.
