A driver struck and killed a pedestrian Wednesday in Northeast Washington, D.C. police said Sunday in a news release.
An initial investigation revealed that at approximately 1:39 p.m. Wednesday, a Ford Focus was traveling northbound on the 5300 block of South Dakota Avenue in the District. A pedestrian — Aray Demissie Zikie, 70 — was crossing the street from south to north in a marked crosswalk, police said.

The driver of the Ford Focus struck Zikie, then immediately came to a stop, police said. The driver stayed at the scene. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded and took Zikie to a hospital.
Zikie died of his injuries Thursday.
