A STANSTED airport terminal has been evacuated as an army bomb squad probes a "suspicious package" discovered in a security area.

       The airport confirmed that a "partial evacuation" took place at the Essex terminal around 1pm - sparking passenger chaos as people rushed outside.

       One worker branded the evacuation "unprecedented", as terrified travellers took to Twitter to share pictures and video footage of the mad scramble outside.

       Tennis champ Emma Raducanu flew into Stansted Airport today after the Transylvania Open quarter-finals, it is understood.

       She is not believed to be caught up in the panic.

       Passenger Reka Ago wrote: "Got to Stansted Airport just in time for an evacuation. Should have known there would be a catch with a ￡10 return flight."

       Joe shared a video of passengers heading outside, and added: "Stansted Airport. Something is happening, not good."

       Meanwhile, David de Lorenzo showed shops pulling across their security awnings inside the terminal.

       He captioned the video: "People asked to leave the stores leaving the shopping carts behind, and being closed in a hurry. What is going on please?"

       Outside the airport, huge crowds gathered as police kept passengers away from the cordon.

       One traveller said there was "zero communication with or reassurance of passengers" as they waited outside.

       An airport spokesperson said: "Following reports of a suspicious package in the security area a partial evacuation of the terminal has taken place as per standard procedure.

       "This has resulted in our security processing area being temporarily closed, and this may impact passengers due to travel on outbound flights at this time.

       'UNPRECEDENTED'

       "Arriving flights are operating as normal.

       "Passengers are advised to check the status of their flight with their airline.”

       An Essex Police spokesperson said: "We are currently on scene at Stansted Airport following concerns about a suspicious package in the security area.

       "A cordon has been set up.

       "Passengers have been evacuated from that area of the airport and everyone has been brought to a position of safety.

       "Military explosive experts have been called to assess the package."
