KYOTO -- The final edition of an illumination event in the Arashiyama district of Japan's ancient capital began on Dec. 10, with tourist spots such as the Togetsu Bridge and the Chikurin-no-Komichi bamboo forest path lit by floodlights and lanterns, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.
The Kyoto Arashiyama Hanatouro illumination event has been held annually since 2002 by Kyoto Prefecture, the city of Kyoto, the Kyoto Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and other bodies to attract visitors during the off-season. As tourists are now coming to visit the area throughout the year, this is the last time the event will be held.
As measures against coronavirus infections, operators have set up the walking courses to prevent crowding, such as making the Chikurin-no-Komichi path one-way. Alcohol disinfectants have also been placed at multiple locations.
The event will run until Dec. 19, and the area will be lit up from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. For inquiries, please contact the Kyoto Hanatouro Promotion Council at 075-212-8173 (in Japanese).
