Donald Trump’s defamation trial resumes in New York on Wednesday, with his accuser E Jean Carroll set to testify.
The case was brought against the Republican presidential candidate by the former Elle magazine columnist after she accused him of sexually assaulting her in a department store dressing room in the mid-1990s, for which Mr Trump was found liable last year.
He has consistently denied any wrongdoing and claims never to have met Ms Carroll.
The defendant appeared in court on Tuesday to witness jury selection but left at the lunch break before each side delivered their opening statements.
The GOP presidential nominee-presumptive is otherwise turning his attention towards campaigning in New Hampshire ahead of that state’s all-important primary next week.
He will be hoping to keep up the momentum after storming to victory in the Iowa caucuses on Monday night.
Mr Trump notched up more than 51 per cent of the vote in the Midwest while his Republican challengers Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley followed way behind in second and third place with 21 per cent and 19 per cent respectively.

Show latest update 28 minutes ago Recap: Trump unleashes Truth Social attacks against E Jean Carroll while sitting in court
In case you missed this yesterday, the Republican was up to his old tricks – trolling his accuser even while he was sat in the courtroom in Lower Manhattan watching jury selection at his defamation trial.
Those with long memories might recall his engagement in live witness intimidation during the House impeachment hearings of 2019 when he posted nasty remarks on Twitter about former US ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch while she gave evidence against him.
Here’s Alex Woodward with more.

58 minutes ago Trump sex abuse accuser E Jean Carroll set to testify in defamation trial
Less than a year after convincing a jury that former president Donald Trump sexually abused her decades ago, writer E Jean Carroll is set to take the stand again to describe how his verbal attacks affected her after she came forward.
Carroll is due to testify pn Wednesday in the second federal civil trial over her claims against Trump, who denies them all. Because the first jury found that Trump sexually abused Carroll in the 1990s and then defamed her in 2022, the new trial concerns only how much more — if anything — he’ll be ordered to pay her for his remarks.
Trump, who is juggling court appearances with campaign stops as he leads the Republican field in this year’s presidential race, sat in on jury selection on Tuesday. Before opening statements began, he left for a New Hampshire rally.
He declared on social media on Tuesday that the case was nothing but “fabricated lies and political shenanigans” that had garnered his accuser money and fame.
“I am the only one injured by this attempted EXTORTION,” read a post on his Truth Social platform.
But Carroll, an advice columnist and magazine writer, has said that Trump harmed her deeply.
First, she claims, he forced himself on her in a dressing room after a chance meeting at a luxury department store in 1996.
Then he publicly impugned her honesty, her motives and even her sanity after she told the story publicly in a 2019 memoir.

1 hour ago Truth Social: Trump shares Haley-as-Hillary meme
The former president has been posting an awful lot of anti-Nikki Haley content on his principal social account overnight, which, she would say, indicates that he is worried about the threat she poses to him in New Hampshire despite her disappointing third-place showing in Iowa.
The comparison below is pretty empty but may well succeed in riling up his supporters with angry memories of their own personal Public Enemy No.1, whom, of course, Trump beat.

1 hour ago Capitol Police probing assassination remarks allegedly made by Roger Stone
The Capitol Police are reportedly investigating alleged remarks made by Roger Stone calling for the assassination of a pair of Democratic lawmakers.
Mr Stone allegedly told a former NYPD police officer who worked for him, Sal Greco, that Congressmen Jerrold Nadler and Eric Swalwell needed to “die” before the 2020 election.
The conversation was captured in an audio recording, which Mediaite obtained and published last week.
Graig Graziosi has the details:

2 hours ago Trump congratulates DeSantis and Haley for having ‘a good time together’
Donald Trump used his victory speech in Iowa to congratulate his Republican primary opponents for “having a good time together.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley failed to secure even half the number of votes that were case for Mr Trump in Iowa on Monday.
News networks began calling the race for Mr Trump as early as a half-hour after the caucuses began.
Mr Trump, flanked by his sons Don Jr and Eric, gave a victory speech Monday evening.
Graig Graziosi has the story:
Trump congratulates DeSantis and Haley for having ‘a good time together’ ‘I also want to congratulate Vivek, because he did a hell of a job, he came from zero and he’s got a big percent, probably almost eight percent, and that is an amazing job’ Mr Trump said

4 hours ago Haley claims the US has ‘never been a racist country’
Presidential hopeful Nikki Haley has claimed the US has “never been a racist country” as she dismissed the suggestion that she would struggle to gain the GOP nomination as a woman of colour.
One day after a national holiday celebrating US civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr, the former Governor of South Carolina described her experience as the “American dream” and also denied that the Republican party itself was racist.

6 hours ago After unnoticeable Iowa caucus showing, Asa Hutchinson suspends 2024 campaign
Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson dropped out of the 2024 presidential race on Tuesday after a whisper of a performance in the Iowa caucuses.
Mr Hutchinson had been one of two prominent Republicans in the race most vocal about their concerns stemming from the candidacy of Donald Trump, who set a record with his own blowout performance in the caucuses, taking 51 per cent of the vote.
In a statement, he acknowledged that his message of opposition against the frontrunner had not gone over well among Republican voters.
John Bowden reports from Des Moines:

7 hours ago He promised to set the world on fire, but Ramaswamy barely made a sound
Vivek Ramaswamy tried to rile the masses through a 2024 presidential campaign punctuated with brazen claims and flashes of cash, but he ended up without a crowd at all.
The entrepreneur has dropped out of the race after racking up less than eight per cent of the Iowa caucus vote. Ahead of the caucuses, the Republican candidate encouraged his followers to “stick it to the media and shock the world.”
His campaign seemingly hinged on providing shock value.
Kelly Rissman has the story:
Ramaswamy promised to set the world on fire. He barely made a sound The entrepreneur had urged his followers to ‘stick it to the media and shock the world’ at the Iowa caucuses, but nothing about the result was shocking

8 hours ago Analysis: Trump gets ‘best case scenario’ in Iowa
Donald Trump ended up with what could be described as a “best-case scenario” after he won the Iowa caucuses by a historic margin.
Mr Trump achieved blowout in the first-in-the-nation contest, with the fight for second being won by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley on Monday night.
Ms Haley had the momentum going into the caucuses, but her progress was stunted by Mr DeSantis, Matt Fuller of The Daily Beast noted before all the votes had been counted. Ms Haley’s performance still did not allow Mr DeSantis to hit the ground running going into the New Hampshire primary on 23 January.
Gustaf Kilander has the details...

Justin Trudeau has said that if Donald Trump is re-elected as US president, it will not “be easy” for Canada.
The Canadian prime minister remarks on Tuesday echo concerns by the president of the European Central Bank Christine Lagarde, who previously warned that the re-election of the former president would be a threat to Europe.
