KUALA LUMPUR: The Housing and Local Development Ministry will look to propose 12 new initiatives on tackling current housing and urbanisation issues during the two-day Cabinet retreat, says Nga Kor Ming.

Among them will be initiatives to tackle the lack of affordable housing, promote the adoption of a secular economy, local government reurbanisation and the renewal of dilapidated public housing projects.

In this regard, Nga added that the proposed Urban Renewal Act is slated to be tabled in Parliament this year.

He said the two-day retreat, which takes place in Cyberjaya, Selangor, beginning Wednesday (Jan 17), requires each ministry to propose at least six initiatives under its purview.

“All of us have been told to submit at least six new initiatives per ministry on how to benefit the people with a focus on economic development.

“This is because 2024 will be a crucial year for our nation in terms of recovering from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and recent world events,” he told the press after hosting the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) Power Chat 2.0 at Wisma Chinese Chamber here on Tuesday (Jan 16).

The retreat is the second to be held by the unity government since it started in 2022.
