Tories apologise over migration and admit 'we got it wrong'

Shadow home secretary Chris Philp has apologised for the Conservatives' record in office on immigration.

He said the measures announced by Kemi Badenoch to make it harder to obtain permission to permanently live in the UK were part of a process to rebuild trust with voters.

Asked if he would apologise for what happened under the Tories, said: "Yes. The last government made mistakes.

"We've said that already, it was a mistake, we got it wrong and it shouldn't have happened.

"And that is why, under a new leader, there is a new approach.

The Conservatives spent 14 years in government pledging to reduce the number of people coming to the UK but net migration - the difference between those entering and leaving - hit a record of 745,000 in 2022 before dropping to 685,000 in 2023.

       Starmer wants to axe Reeves

Keir Starmer wants to axe Rachel Reeves as Chancellor in a major shake-up of his top team to revive Labour’s plunging popularity.

In a shock move, the Prime Minister is considering moving Home Secretary Yvette Cooper to the Treasury to boost the country’s economic fortunes.

His reshuffle would see Starmer-loyalist Pat McFadden, currently the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, shift to the Home Office as the government seeks to get a grip on the immigration crisis.

Defence Secretary John Healey is also facing the bullet because of an ongoing defence spending row.

The merry-go-round means Luke Pollard could replace Healey at the MoD with Labour newbie and former Royal Marine Alistair Carns tipped for a defence role.

Insiders say an “active process is going on” as Sir Keir considers how and when to execute a reshuffle, which is most likely to happen in the Spring.

A Whitehall source said: “Keir needs to shake things up and there is an active process going on to consider all the options.”

Minister denies Labour is 'undoing' Brexit

The Government is not "hitting the rewind" on Brexit, a Cabinet Office minister has insisted.

In a statement on UK-EU relations, Nick Thomas-Symonds told the Commons: "This Government will be guided by what I'm calling ruthless pragmatism, working in the UK's national interest, to make people across the UK safer, more secure and more prosperous.

"The Government's position is that it is in the British national interest to improve our economic, safety and security relationships with our nearest neighbours. We reject the ideological approach of the past and will make a hard-headed assessment of the British national interest."

He added: "This Government has been clear that we are not hitting rewind, we are not undoing Brexit, and we are not rejoining the single market or the customs union.

"But we are looking to make Brexit work in a ruthlessly pragmatic way. That is the spirit we are taking into the discussions with the EU (European Union), not a zero-sum game, but a win-win for both sides, with people in the UK and across the EU benefiting."

Russian diplomat’s accreditation revoked by Foreign Office

A Russian diplomat has had their accreditation revoked by the UK in a tit-for-tat move after Moscow expelled a British official last year.

Russian ambassador to the UK Andrey Kelin was summoned to the Foreign Office to be informed of the move by the Government.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We have summoned the Russian ambassador for a meeting with a senior British official to revoke the accreditation of a Russian diplomat.

“This is in response to Russia’s unprovoked and baseless decision to strip the accreditation of a British diplomat in Moscow in November.

“The UK will not stand for intimidation of our staff in this way and so we are taking reciprocal action.

“Any further action taken by Russia will be considered an escalation and responded to accordingly.”

Daughter of murdered MP says ‘everyone failed by Prevent’ should get inquiry

The daughter of a murdered MP has called for “everybody else that Prevent failed” to get an inquiry into the death of their loved one.

Katie Amess, 39, is the daughter of Sir David Amess, the Conservative Southend West MP who was stabbed to death as he carried out a constituency surgery at a church in Leigh-on-Sea in October 2021.

It was later revealed that Sir David’s killer, Ali Harbi Ali, had been referred to the the Government’s counter-terrorism programme Prevent prior to the attack, but that his case had been closed.

Too much focus by Prevent on Southport killer’s ‘absence of ideology’ – minister

A review into the handling of the Southport child killer under the Government’s counter-terrorism programme Prevent has concluded “too much focus was placed on the absence of a distinct ideology”, security minister Dan Jarvis has said.

As the findings were published, Mr Jarvis told MPs there was an “under-exploration” of the significance of Axel Rudakubana’s repeat referrals, including his history of violence.

       'Lunacy!'

Labour’s land use policies amount to “food lunacy”, a Conservative shadow environment minister has warned.

Robbie Moore told the Commons: “When we thought it couldn’t get any worse, the Government roll out their latest attack on our farming community and UK food production, setting the direction that they want to replace food production with around 20% of farmland being dedicated to solar farms, tree planting, biodiversity offsetting and wildlife habitats, all to meet green targets.

“The proposed figures are astonishing, with well over a million hectares being proposed to be taken out of food production by this Government, and the economic analysis already predicts that well over 12,000 farms will be lost within a generation as a result of this Government’s policies.

“So, will the minister acknowledge that hardworking farmers are being caught in the crossfire in this Government’s dash towards green targets?

“And does the minister recognise the fear amongst our farmers that their policies amount not to food security, but food lunacy?”

Nature minister Mary Creagh said: “There’s a lot of sound and fury but this is something that they were working on.”

Referring to a previous vote over a deposit return scheme (DRS), to give consumers money back if they recycle drinks containers, Ms Creagh added: “It’s shades of the DRS, which was essentially his legislation and where the frontbench was absent without leave when it came to the vote.”

Turning to the Land Use Framework, the minister said it had been “welcomed by farmers in giving certainty and security, something that was sadly lacking from the previous government”.

Tories quizzed on new plans to tackle migration

Shadow home secretary Chris Philp was quizzed on whether someone would be granted indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in several scenarios, including if they worked in McDonald’s during a career break, if they claimed benefits for “too long” or if they suddenly fell seriously ill.

“If someone over a period of time has consistently claimed benefits and not worked then we don’t want to give them indefinite leave to remain,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

On someone falling ill, Mr Philp said: “It won’t entail going through the individual medical records of each person. It’ll entail looking at the salary level somebody has earned over a period of time.

“If someone obviously has not worked then they would not qualify for ILR and they would be required to leave. Or if they’ve worked at a low salary level, which is likely to mean they are on average not making a contribution, again, they won’t get ILR indefinitely.”

He said someone who has had a “short period out of work” but otherwise has worked “at a good salary” and has made a “net contribution” would qualify for IRL.

Tories unveil fresh migration measures to take on Reform

The shadow home secretary said immigrants who have failed to make a “net contribution” to the UK economy over time should not get indefinite leave to remain (ILR) and should be “required to leave” at the end of their visa.

It comes after Tory leader Kemi Badenoch urged the Government to make it harder for immigrants to secure permanent residency or a UK passport.

Chris Philp told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Only people who actually work as they said they would and actually make a net contribution should have the privilege of getting ILR.

“If someone’s come here on a work visa, if they don’t work as they’re supposed to, then that work visa should be cancelled and they should be required to leave.

“Or if they come to the end of their work visa and it turns out they have not made a net contribution because they’ve been working on very low wages, then we would not propose to give that person indefinite leave but at the end of the visa require them to leave.”

He added that “you don’t want people coming here who are essentially a drain on the taxpayer”.

Philp: Immigrants legally coming into the UK in the past were “far too high”

Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said the numbers of immigrants legally coming into the UK in the past were “far too high”.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Mistakes were made by the previous government, and Kemi and I have openly and honestly acknowledged that mistakes were made in the past.

“The numbers were far too high, no question about that, and that’s why under new leadership there are new policies and there is a new approach.”

He said one element of the new approach would be having a “hard cap” on the number of visas that get issued each year, but did not provide a figure.

Top civil servants face sack without saving taxpayers cash

Top civil servants have been told they could face the sack if they fail to save taxpayers money under rules announced by the government.

Senior leaders will be held personally responsible for achieving savings in their departments as part of reforms to how the civil service manages performance.

Those who do well could be rewarded while those who fail to hit targets face dismissal.
