Two police officers and a suspect were shot Friday afternoon after officers responded to a report of a man with a gun in Frederick, Md., officials said.

Frederick City Police Chief Jason Lando said the officers responded around 12:43 p.m. to the report of a “suspicious male” with a firearm at Key Parkway and Waverley Drive.

“When our first two officers arrived on the scene, shortly thereafter … we received emergency traffic over the air there had been a shooting,” Lando said.

Two officers and one suspect were shot in the intersection, Lando said, and taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. The suspect was in serious condition but the officers were released late Friday, Frederick officials said.

At a news conference outside the hospital, officials said that the officers and the suspect all had been shot in the torso.

Thomas M. Scalea, the Shock Trauma’s physician-in-chief, condemned the rise in gun violence in the region, and said five people had been admitted to Shock Trauma by 2 p.m. on Friday.

“That’s nuts,” he said. “This is out of control. It’s so demoralizing to do this day after day.”

By 5 p.m., the intersection of Key Parkway and Waverley Drive was still taped off with yellow police tape and flashing police cars lined the road. Neighbors watched from their apartment balconies and several area schools had been placed on lockout status Friday afternoon.

Todd Wivell, spokesperson for the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, said the officers who responded to the call “approached the person in a nonconfrontational manner.”

“[They] did everything they could to de-escalate any situation,” he said. Wivell said Maryland State Police will investigate the shooting.

The officers injured were identified as Bryan Snyder, 43, a two-year veteran of the department, and Kristen Kowalsky, 32, a nine-year veteran.

The man shot was identified as 25-year-old Dominique Lamar Lewis.

Lando said the Frederick police have body cameras, but the footage from the shooting had yet to be reviewed. The shooting remains under investigation, Lando said.

“These officers risked their lives. They’re out there every day,” Lando said. “It’s very disheartening as a police chief.”

Dan Morse, Erin Cox and Justin Jouvenal contributed to this report.
