A post on Facebook went viral after people were divided on the correct way to pronounce Primark. One user asked in the Family Lowdown Tips & Ideas group: “How do you pronounce Primark? (The clothes store). I thought everyone said it the same until yesterday when I heard someone call it Pr-E-Mark, I say Pr-I-Mark. Which is right?"
People quickly flooded the comments to argue the correct pronunciation is ‘Pr-eye-mark’, but not everyone agreed as one user wrote: “Pree-mark because we enjoy messing perfectly pronounceable words up in Northern Ireland."
Someone from South Wales also confirmed the store is known as ‘Preemark’ to them.
Others confused things even further by calling it Penneys, the store’s name in the Republic of Ireland.

The only version that everyone was able to come to a unanimous agreement on was Primani.
Over on TikTok, ex-Primark employee @Pontasaurus tried to have the final say by stating that it should be pronounced Pr-eye-mark, not Pree-mark - and anyone who disagrees is simply wrong.
Another user echoed: “It is spelt the same as primary and you didn’t go to pree-mary school, so it’s Pry-mark.”
However, people still argued that the correct way is Pree-mark. One man said: “I find in Scotland we say Pree-mark, whereas England say Pry-mark.”

Another replied: “I am Welsh, most of us call it Pree-mark over here.”
Due to the popularity of the debate, Primark itself has been forced to clarify its own pronunciation and create a dedicated page on the website to deal with the issue.
The website states: "How do you pronounce Primark? That's a very good question. We like to use Pr-Eye-Mark."
So there you have it. It’s Pr-EYE-mark, and for those pronouncing it differently, it’s time to accept defeat and move on.
