Six people were being treated at hospitals Sunday morning after suffering injuries in multiple crashes on the Bishop Ford Freeway on the Far South Side, according to Chicago Fire Department officials.
The first crash occurred when a 29-year-old man driving south lost control of a 2011 black Ford Fusion and struck a 2013 bronze Hyundai Tucson. The crash caused the Hyundai to roll over, and its driver, a 31-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Ford, of Tampa, Florida, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
Illinois State Police said in a news release Sunday afternoon that officials did not know why the driver of the Ford lost control of his vehicle, though an investigation is pending.
The first crash caused three subsequent crashes, all of which occurred shortly before 5 a.m. on Interstate 94 south at 111th Street in the Pullman neighborhood.
One passenger was ejected from a vehicle and taken to a hospital with “life-threatening” injuries, Trooper Edgar Valdez De Leon, a state police spokesman, said in an email.
At least 12 people were involved in the crash, according to Larry Merritt, a spokesman for the Fire Department. Three men were taken to hospitals in serious to critical condition; two people were taken to hospitals in fair to serious condition; and one person was taken to a hospital for observation. Six other people refused to be taken to a hospital.
Two of the people who were injured were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. Two others were taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, while one person was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center and another to Roseland Community Hospital.
All lanes of Interstate 94 south remained closed until about 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
