TANABE, Wakayama -- A committee to promote tourism in southern Wakayama Prefecture in west Japan has published a book of 114 photos solicited through a photo contest on Instagram, including nine that won prizes.

In the contest, the Nanki Area Tourism Promotion Executive Committee sought photos that convey the charm of the city of Tanabe and the towns of Shirahama, Kamitonda and Susami in southern Wakayama Prefecture, and 1,368 photos were submitted.

The top prize was given to "Tenjinzaki" by @rin_wakayama3, who captured the fantastical scene of a sea's surface reflecting the sky like a mirror. Tenjinzaki cape in Tanabe, where people can take such photos, has been dubbed "Wakayama's Uyuni Salt Flat" in recent years -- a reference to the world-famous scenery of the salt flat in Bolivia. The book also contains photos of the Senjojiki rock plateau in Shirahama, Sukumadani Kannon temple in Kamitonda, and Mirozu Station on the JR Kisei Line in Susami.

Four-thousand copies of the 32-page photo book, which is the same size as a CD insert, have been printed, and they are available for free at tourism information centers, roadside stations and elsewhere in the four municipalities. The photo book can also be downloaded from the Wakayama Nanki Area Tourist Information website at: http://www.wakayama-nanki.jp/guidebook/photo-book2021/index.html
