Simon Coveney tweeted his support for the Three Lions, calling them the "best team in tournament so far", in what some Irish fans perceived as a brutal snub to fellow EU-member state Denmark. Scores of Irish people took issue with his public support for the English, with some even questioning in disbelief if he his account had been hacked.

       Mr Coveney tweeted: "Good luck to England tonight. Best team in tournament so far, we wish our neighbours well!!"

       He paired England and Ireland flag emojis alongside his message which was met by scathing criticism shortly after he posted it.

       One man said: "I think that it would be better for Ireland to support our allies.

       "That would be Denmark, in case you're confused."

       A second critic responded: "But... Denmark, our EU companions and partners?"

       And yet a third said: "What about our European neighbours Denmark? Come on Denmark."

       And a fourth simply replied: "F**k off."

       Another person said "most Irish are supporting Denmark", who ended up losing to England 2-1.

       Others said Mr Coveney's statement was evidence of how "far removed" many politicians in Dublin are from the people of Ireland.

       One said: "This tweet alone shows just how far removed politicians are from the majority of the people they are handsomely paid too serve."

       Another tweeted: "What? The whole country is cheering on Denmark. Read the room Simon, read the room."

       And another told him they doubted if "anyone in England cares about your well wishes right now Simon".

       Another man joked that the government minister appeared to be "crawling" on his stomach to please the Brits.

       The person said: "Telegram from British Government to Simon Coveney — 'Simon, if we want you to crawl we’ll tell you when'."

       But among those who welcomed his tweet was Paul Johnston, Britain's ambassador to Ireland.

       He said: "Thank you @simoncoveney - we needed the luck of the Irish!"

       The Three Lions' victory over the Danes at Wembley stadium last night thrilled football fans across the country.

       Captain Harry Kane's extra-time winner secured the team's spot in the Euro final against Italy on Sunday.

       It will be the first time England will play in a major final since 1966.

       Boris Johnson, who was at Wembley with wife Carrie to watch the game, tweeted: "Tonight England played their hearts out.

       "What a fantastic performance from Gareth Southgate's squad.

       "Now to the final. Let's bring it home".

       The Duke of Cambridge, who is president of the Football Association, was also among the crowds cheering on the team from the side lines.

       The duke tweeted afterwards: "What a game, what a result! A huge team effort England.

       "The whole country will be behind you on Sunday #ItsComingHome".
