Brexiteers are rightly worried about the Prime Minister's next moves (Image: Photothek via Getty Images)
As EU chiefs meet in London tomorrow to attend a ‘reset summit’ regarding the UK’s future relationship with the bloc, the message to Keir Starmer is clear: DO NOT BETRAY BREXIT. The guestlist for this meeting is certainly heavyweight. Alongside ministers of EU states and their representatives, the Prime Minister will also be hosting Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission and Antonia Costa, President of the European Council. They will all meet to discuss closer co-operation between the UK and the EU across a variety of areas. Brexiteers will be concerned that this first summit is the beginning of a ploy to somehow covertly rejoin the EU.
Their concerns are justified. Throughout his career, Starmer has long been a supporter of the UK’s membership of the EU and along with his Labour pals, did as much as possible to thwart Brexit. He led the Parliamentary opposition to the UK leaving the EU. A glance at his Parliamentary record shows he voted dozens of times against the legislation needed to take this country out of the bloc.

Brexit betrayal fears with UK fishermen dreading the worst as key deadline looms [LATEST]
Macron voices WW3 risk as he opens up on deploying nuclear-armed warplanes [LATEST]
Despite pledging in recent months that he is not attempting to overturn Brexit, it is hard to see how he can be trusted on this. Let us not forget that the first several months of his Government saw various measures introduced that were not in their manifesto – such as the axing of winter fuel payments for most pensioners, along with various other U-turns.
Trust is an issue when it comes to this Government and putting the UK first. The areas up for discussion at the meeting include a new youth mobility scheme, an EU/UK defence pact, food and product standards. EU leaders are extremely keen to agree a youth mobility scheme which would see young people in the UK and EU able to move and work freely in countries for a limited period, thought to be between one and two years.
Those aged between 18 and 30 would benefit from this, though reports suggest it could be extended to anyone under the age of 35. Supporters say this could help grow the UK economy, but Brexiteers fear it would introduce freedom of movement and open borders by stealth.
If this were to be agreed, it would also fly in the face of the Prime Minister’s recent pledges about understanding people’s concerns about high levels of immigration to the UK. Whilst it may only see people arriving and staying here on a temporary basis, it would still result in increased pressure on services and facilities.
Trending
A defence pact between the EU and UK could see British defence companies benefitting from an EU-wide defence fund, along with greater security cooperation and intelligence sharing.
Whilst on paper the benefits look assured, it is not clear what the UK would have to give in return to become part of such a pact. It could see British taxpayers pay for entry which would not be vastly different from the old days of the UK contributing billions to the EU’s budget.
An alignment of food and product standards has long been touted as a way of easing post-Brexit difficulties when it comes to trade. Branded as a “dynamic alignment” when it comes to food standards, it would see the UK following any changes in EU regulations. It is feared that this kind of agreement would see some bits of UK food regulation fall under the power of the European Court of Justice – a move that would horrify Brexiteers.
Parliament is currently debating the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill which would allow ministers to align British product standards with EU regulations across many industrial and consumer goods.
Designed to make trade easier between Great Britain and Northern Ireland (which still follows EU rules) the concern by critics is that it erodes UK independence as it would enable the EU to influence UK law indirectly through Northern Ireland.

What is not clear is the price that Keir Starmer is prepared to pay for a closer relationship with the EU. French ministers continually demand greater fishing rights in UK waters, whilst the Spanish seem keen to use our Government’s wish for a closer relationship with the EU as an opportunity to extort certain rights over Gibraltar.

Neither can be allowed to happen. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has rightly said that “when Labour negotiates, Britain loses.”
She is right – just look at the hash the Government has made over the Chagos Islands deal or rewarding unions with inflation-busting pay increases despite zero reform.
The 17.4 million people who backed Brexit will be watching Starmer’s next move closely. If they sense betrayal, there will be hell to pay.
