Tory MP and Chair of the House of Commons Defence Select Committee, Tobias Ellwood, insisted Boris Johnson must look at strengthening ties with India. During an interview with Express.co.uk, Mr Ellwood argued Brexit Britain must better utilise its connection with India.
He also said the UK could positively impact India's political issues with its neighbours.
Mr Ellwood said: "I don't think we need to be wary about them but India is a country I am very positive about.
"We need to keep them close.
"We don't leverage the diaspora we have here, the bond, the connectivity, we don't leverage that nearly enough.

"This is a massive democracy and it will be ever more powerful.
"They are looking very carefully at what China is doing, they are in an interesting part of the global neighbourhood.
"They are going to become a major power in their own right.
"I think we should do more and more to work with them and advance with them."
Mr Ellwood also highlighted some of the political issues that the UK can help India resolve as the two nations strengthen their bond.
He placed significant importance on resolving India's issues with Pakistan.
He hinted that this could also come to benefit the UK and West in general.
He said: "We need to solve the India Pakistan issue.

"It is a major factor in why Afghanistan went wrong, why the Taliban was able to do a run across the Pakistan border.
"They were given safe haven, they were able to rearm, regroup and retrain then come back a few years later.
"How can any military capability, even the might of NATO, match that when you are trying to catch a mouse in a room and are not willing to go the other end of it."
