'Nobody forced the British!' Loiseau hits out at Frost's demands to rip up Brexit protocol

French MEP Nathalie Loiseau argued against any changes to the Northern Ireland protocol and the already agreed Brexit withdrawal agreement. While speaking on BBC's Today Programme, she took aim at Brexit negotiator Lord David Frost, who has argued against the EU's interpretation of the Northern Ireland protocol. She said the EU were very clear that the Northern Ireland protocol could not be scrapped.

She added that nobody forced the UK to sign the withdrawal agreement and agree to the Northern Ireland protocol and it was not fair to back out of it now.

Today host Mishal Husain said: "So if you want out of the European Court of Justice you have to want out for Northern Ireland of its special status in relation to the European Single Market?"

Ms Loiseau said: "It means that you tear up the Northern Ireland Protocol and it is part of the withdrawal agreement and we cannot agree on that.

"We were very clear from the very beginning, nobody forced the British Government to sign the Withdrawal agreement."

Ms Loiseau was also asked how she felt the ongoing row was going to end.

She replied: "I sincerely hope that the British Government will take time to look at the proposal put forward by the European Commission.

"This is because it fixes problems, I am wondering who is a problem solver and who is a trouble maker.

"We are serious, I never heard people in Northern Ireland saying that it was terrible that there was a rule for the European Court of Justice."

Lord Frost has said the UK was ready to suspend the Northern Ireland Protocol through Article 16 in order to safeguard the peace process of the Good Friday Agreement

In a keynote speech in Lisbon, the UK Brexit minister said the protocol, agreed with the EU as part of the UK's divorce settlement, was not working and that fundamental change was necessary if it was to survive.

BBC's Adam Fleming broke down Brexit Minister Lord Frost's demands to the European Union for changes to the Brexit protocol.

He said: “Under the Northern Ireland bit of the Brexit deal known as the protocol, some EU law relating to goods, plant and animal products, and medicines, still applies in Northern Ireland, even after Brexit has happened.

“That is so that goods can flow freely from Northern Ireland to Ireland without any checks.

“But it means that there are checks on some things going from Great Britain into Northern Ireland.

“Now the UK is finding that pretty intolerable.”
