GEORGE TOWN: With a dedicated mass for senior citizens, the congregation at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows prayed for those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic as they gave thanks on Good Friday.
Four services were held at the church in Jalan Macalister to ensure health guidelines were met, with the first of the day at 8am for seniors.
Gathering to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the prayers were led by liturgy chairman Aaron Lim before the veneration of the cross.
During the hour-and-a-half mass, the congregation also prayed for those affected by the tribulations of the pandemic.
Among the faithful was John David, 69, who said he had been coming to the church on Good Friday since he was a child.
“I have not missed a year and even during the pandemic, I came whenever it was permitted.
“To me, Good Friday is to give thanks for being saved by Jesus and his sacrifices. During these times with Covid-19, it seems right to be grateful for staying safe and healthy,” he said.
David said it was nice to not worry about crowding in church and to have ample parking, with just about 70 people turning up to keep with the SOP.
“Things were smooth and I enjoyed the serenity,” said the retired library researcher.
Lim said this year, there were four sessions – at 8am, noon, 4pm and 8pm, adding that all allowed to attend had to be registered earlier.
Lim said four separate services were held to accommodate more people while adhering to health guidelines.
Assistant parish priest Rev Michael Das said it was the first time a service was held specially for senior citizens.
“We wanted to cater to them,” he added.
All churches held similar services yesterday. Christians mark Holy Saturday today followed by Easter tomorrow.
