Footage shared online showed a street in South Hampstead submerged in knee-high water as torrential rain and flash floods bring misery to London residents and travellers. Reports also show the Westminster area, Westfield and Cricklewood have also been hit by the sudden bad weather with underground stations like Sloane Square seeing streams of water flowing down steps and onto the tracks below. The Met Office says heavy rain is likely to blame for the localised flooding and warns further flooding and thunderstorms could hit some parts of southern England later this evening.

London Fire Brigade tweeted it had received 150 flooding calls at around 5pm on Monday as rain battered some parts of the capital.

They urged everyone to remain indoors, protect their properties wherever they can and, in serious cases, prepare a grab bag to be evacuated.

The Met Office put in place a yellow rain warning from 10am on Monday across most of the south of England.

The weather warning will be in place until midnight.

Both the north and south of London have been hit by the floods with footage showing some areas around Camden dealing with floods.

Some Hammersmith residents have also been evacuated from their homes as authorities urge people not to travel in the water.

Fire services say some sewers have been backed up in some areas meaning the waters could be a health hazard.

Many train services have had to be cancelled including most trains coming in and out of Euston Station.

Some lines including the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Bakerloo line have cancelled some trips between stations with delays on all other routes expected.

Residents in west London say a thunderstorm has been stationary over areas like Wembley for over an hour.

Online footage also showed water descending down a public stairwell onto the main road as cars slowly moved through the water.

Many commented on the surprisingly violent weather on Twitter.
