Worcestershire: Burglar caught on CCTV trying to disable camera

A bungling burglar was caught red-handed after clearly showing his face while bashing a Ring doorbell camera.

Sam Norman, 35, stared straight into the lens at the moment his hood slipped revealing his face in crystal-clear detail.

Footage shows the dozy crook, who was also wearing distinctive bright pinkish red gloves, poking the security camera with a pole until it pointed away from him but it was too late.

He even came face-to-face with the homeowner who was in at the time of the botched break-in on July 10.

Norman fled the property in Salt Boxes, Pershore, Worcestershire, on a bicycle but was caught when police recognised his mug from the footage

Norman, of Drakes Broughton, Worcestershire, admitted attempted burglary as well as two other break-ins when he appeared at Worcester Crown Court.

He was handed an 18-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months and a 12-week 9pm to 8.30am curfew. The court heard Norman targeted the property which was being renovated.

The video shows Norman looking through a wheelie bin before finding the pole of a rotary dryer which he uses to jab at the security camera.

When he was confronted by the homeowner, Norman apologised before fleeing the scene empty handed.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: "There was a confrontation in the garden.

"He [Norman] was trying to get into the house and activated the Ring doorbell camera and then tried to move the camera.

"The homeowner challenged him and he apologised and cycled off. He did not get away with any property."

Norman pleaded guilty after officers identified him from the footage. When officers attended his home, he tried to escape but was caught after a short foot chase.

While in custody it was also established that Norman was involved in a burglary in Pershore on June 27. He was also disturbed by the homeowner and fled empty handed.
