Speaking to talkRADIO on Tuesday, Mr Mehmet explained how serious questions must be asked about the future of immigration in Britain and what measures need to be brought in by the government to adapt to a changing population in Britain. He aknoweldged that while Britain does have an ageing population which contributes to population size, he stressed the government are not forming strategies to form social integration and cohesion projects despite the growing figures over the past 20 years.
Host Julia Hartley-Brewer asked: “How is that immigration is driving population rises, is the number of immigrants arriving in the country or birth rates subsequent to that?
“Both - although looking over the last 20 years, we have had net 300,000 people a year coming to this country.
“We have had an increase of eight million people to our population...
“In that time, 7 million of which has been a result of immigration - Immigrants coming here but children born to them as well.”

He explained how the “percentages are extraordinary” as he explained how the numbers stack up from 20 years ago.
Mr Mehmet added: “From 4.5 million in 2001 we have risen to nine million people, eight percent to 14 percent in the space of 20 years.
“And if you look at the children born here… we are talking about 13 million people having risen from six million [In 2001].
Host Julia Hartley Brewer went on to say that the numbers, while large, some would see immigration a positive thing for the United Kingdom as immigrants contribute business, skills and a workforce to the country.

Alp Mehmet replied: “Its the scale and speed in with which it is happening.
"And when 90% of the increase in your population is the result of immigration, then clearly we have got to be serious about what happens with integration?
“What is going to happen in the future?
"This poses risks for our cohesion, for the integration that we are all after.

Ms Hartley-Brewer suggested how "these are major demographic changes, they are happening on a very big scale and a very big pace."
She added how immigration can have an "effect on public services" before going on to say how the British public need to be "open to have a free and frank conversation about it."
