       UK negotiator David Frost and his EU counterpart Maros Sefcovic are currently deep in talks over the impasse but Ireland's foreign minister Simon Coveney has seemingly dashed any hopes of a breakthrough. Dublin has insisted there is absolutely no question of Brussels caving on their demands for the ECJ to take a chief role in dealing with disputes in the Northern Ireland protocol.

       Mr Coveney rejected a climbdown saying: “It is a black and white issue. Basically what the EU is saying is that the European Court of Justice has got to be the final arbiter on EU law and regulations."

       But UK is dead against that solution and, with Lord Frost insisting Britain will not relent on its stance, this leaves complete deadlock. According to Lord Frost the dispute could well see the UK triggering Article 16 of the NI protocol - is it finally time to push the button or should Britain wait for the EU to buckle?
