Restaurants hit again as office parties are cancelled due to Omicron Covid variant

Hospitality bosses already struggling amid the pandemic have concerns the number of cancellations will continue to rise as more cases are identified. Dave Critchley, head chef at Liverpool's Chinese restaurant Lu Ban, told how two big brands in the North-west had axed bookings since the weekend.

He said: "We're starting to see a few of the bigger parties cancelling. Luckily not a huge amount at the moment.

"It's a real shame, especially at Christmas time. I do think we're going to see a couple more cancellations."

"The big bookings in December are our bread and butter. They're really important to us so it's slightly concerning and worrying."

Dave, 38, believes the same will be happening across Britain.

Kate Nicholls, chief executive of Hospitality UK, said: "Christmas trade was already looking weaker than usual.

"Operators have invested significantly to ensure the safety of staff and customers.

"This all comes at a critical time for the sector, as costs are rising across the board, supply chain issues continue, chronic labour shortages show no sign of easing and next year will see a return of 20 percent VAT rate."
