A fascinating map shows where in the world the most British expats live, with Australia a clear winner.

Created by UK pension transfer specialists at qropsspecialists.com, the map shows that more than one million Brits lived Down Under in 2006.

The figures come from a report into the British diaspora published by a think tank, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR). It shows Spain was the most popular destination for British expats at the time, with three quarters of a million.

Six hundred thousand Brits were living in Canada and another 670,000 in the United States while in Africa more than 200,000 Brits called South Africa home.

Popular destinations in Europe include Ireland (291,000), France (200,000), Germany (115,000) and Portugal (60,000).

More recent figures show the number of British expats has increased in Australia. According to movehub.com there were 1,262,204 Britons in that country in 2019.

While the number in Canada had dropped to 531,584, the United States saw an increase to 716,260, the 2019 figures show.

The top 10 countries with British expat populations in that year were, in ascending order: Italy (65,645), Germany (98,553), South Africa (131,310), France (176,672), New Zealand (272,436), Ireland (293,061), Spain (302,020), Canada, the US and Australia.

in November, UK Abroad reported that more than 5.5 million British expats currently live outside the UK.

It says most Brits emigrate as they want to live somewhere warmer, while others seek new opportunities abroad.

The passport specialists lists Australia, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and the US as its top five destinations for Brits to relocate to.

Australia is hailed for its sunny weather, Canada for its "peaceful" way of life, South Africa has "beautiful scenery", New Zealand for not being as hot as its neighbour to the north and the US for being relatively easy to settle in.

And of course English is spoken as a first language in all five, making it easier for Brits to integrate with the locals.
