Her son-in-law called an ambulance but was told they were "very, very busy".
And despite being in pain, Dame Mary said she was "perfectly happy" with the wait.
She told the Daily Mail’s Weekend magazine: "We waited for three-and-a-half hours, until 6pm, and quite right too! I was perfectly happy.
"There may have been a road accident. I quite understood that they were busy and Dan was caring for me. He kept me chatting."
The baking queen added: "I sat quite still.
"I’d encourage everyone to have a phone with them always, when they’re out dog-walking, crossing a field... with a phone you can always get help."
Dame Mary, who had polio as a child, said paramedics told her she had broken her hip because one of her feet was turning out.

She was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading and had to stay for ten days after the accident in August.
She had surgery the morning after the fall and only used paracetamol for pain relief.
The TV cook said it was a shock for her husband Paul to see her go off in an ambulance.
But she was full of praise for the medics who helped her and told the Mail that nurses inundated her with pictures of their lemon drizzle cakes while she was in hospital.
She attributed her good recovery to "lots of physio".
