A senior Tory has warned that the party is heading to "Armageddon" under Rishi Sunak's leadership as the latest tracker poll from Techne UK set a new low under his leadership.

With the local elections just a month away Labour's already massive lead has increased by a further two points in the last week to 23 points with Sir Keir Starmer's party on 45% (up 1) and the Tories on 22% (down 1).

In even worse news for Mr Sunak Reform UK's vote is up to its highest level yet in a Techne UK survey to 13% making it clearly the third party in British politics in terms of voter support. The survey of 1,638 voters put the Lib Dems on their lowest share for a year on just 9% (down 1) while the Greens stayed the same on 5%.

The continued increase in the vote share for Reform comes after the defection of Lee Anderson to the party after he was suspended from the Tories following allegations that comments he made about Labour London Mayor Sadiq Khan were "Islamophobic".

Tory MPs, some of whom were at Nigel Farage's 60th birthday last night, are speculating that if Farage decides to run for Reform their vote will increase even further and take more Tory voters away.

One senior Conservative MP described meeting a couple in their constituency who had been lifelong Tory voters.

The MP said: "They told me, 'sorry we think you are a very good MP but we are not voting for you.'

"I asked them why not and they replied 'because we don't like Rishi Sunak and we don't think your party is conservative any more.'"

The MP added: "This sort of thing is happening more and more with colleagues."

Another Tory spoke of the despair in the party among MPs and grassroots supporters, adding: "We are heading for Armaggedon."

Labour are heading for a record majority (Image: ELECTORAL CALCULUS)

Among 2019 Tory voters who gave the party an 80-seat majority with Boris Johnson only 41% would still vote for the party and 17% have switched to Reform while 12% will not vote and another 12% are uncertain.

According to Electoral Calculus, if this was the result of a general election the Tories would be reduced to 55 seats about a third of their worst ever result in 1906 when they won 156.

Meanwhile, Labour would win 500 seats giving them a record majority of 350.

Techne chief executive Michela Morizzo said: "Just when we thought things could not get any worse for Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives our latest tracker poll heaps even greater problems on the Prime Minister.

"Labour’s absolutely dominant polling lead grows even further rising 1 point of national vote share to 45%. At the same time our poll shows the Conservatives dropping 1 point in national vote share now down to just 22%.

"If this significant Labour lead of 23 points over the Conservatives wasn’t bad enough Reform UK grow 1 point in national vote share back to their biggest polling percentage we have ever recorded for them at 13%.

"Such a dramatic set of polling results if delivered at a General Election would see the Conservatives almost decimated with Labour having a truly significant working majority."
