George Galloway will shake up Parliament when he returns to the House of Commons, with the firebrand left-winger’s “rhetorical powers” outclassing those of most MPs, pollster Professor Sir John Curtice has predicted.

Mr Galloway was in an ebullient mood after his victory in yesterday’s Rochdale by-election, vowing to be Sir Keir Starmer’s “worst nightmare” as well as branding the Labour leader and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak “two cheeks of the same backside”.

And Sir John, Professor of Politics at the University of Strathclyde, suggested while the Scotsman’s win would not necessarily damage Labour’s standing in the opinion polls, it would “exaggerate” already existing internal tensions when it came to Israel’s military operation in Gaza.

He said: “We know particularly that the Labour MPs representing constituencies with large Muslim populations have been particularly feeling the heat and concern of that part of their constituency.

“There is some evidence out there that more broadly, Labour may have lost some support among Muslims and there is the supposed threat of people putting up independent candidates.

“I think against that there are two things. One is you are unlikely to find the kind of candidate with the persuasive power and appeal of George Galloway.

“And secondly, most of the seats which Labour holds with large Muslim populations of a size compatible with Rochdale are very safe seats.”

Mr Galloway had got 21 percent of the vote in the Batley and Spen by-election in 2021, Sir John pointed out.

He said: “He's just very good at doing this in that kind of constituency.

“But it's the impact on the internal dynamics and tensions within the Labour Party where the fallout will lie rather than any obvious immediate impact.

“Although it will be interesting to see what George does with his success.

“His presence in the Commons will somewhat point out the limited rhetorical powers of most members of the House of Commons these days, including Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer.

“He is going to make a splash and the next time there is a debate in the House on Gaza he's going to be in there with his three pennie’s worth.”

Mr Galloway was from a different era in British politics, Prof Sir John said, adding: “He’s got he's got the ability to speak in a way that so few of our politicians do at the moment.”

On the wider implications of the by-election Prof Sir John said it was “another really bad result for the Tories” - although he pointed out that turnout was marginally up on the recent votes in Wellingborough and Kingswood.

Mr Galloway's majority of 5,697 votes amounted to 18.3 percent of the total, on a turnout of 39.7 percent.

In his victory speech, he began by focusing on Palestine, saying: "Keir Starmer, this is for Gaza. You have paid, and you will pay, a high price for the role that you have played in enabling, encouraging and covering for the catastrophe presently going on in occupied Palestine in the Gaza Strip."

He said he would put Rochdale councillors "on notice" that he intended to form a "grand alliance" to "clean the town hall up" at the local elections in May.

After he was interrupted by a heckler accusing him of being a "climate change denier", and confetti was thrown at him, he went on to pledge to campaign for the return of a maternity ward to Rochdale and to help save the town's troubled football club.

Speaking on Sky News last night minutes Mr Sunak's statement outside Number 10 last night, Mr Galloway did not mince his words, telling Sam Coates: "I despise the Prime Minister" and saying the "skids were under" Sir Keir.
