Emergency services were called to the scene at Brompton Park in Ardoyne, Belfast at around 8.16pm on Tuesday night. Police Service Northern Ireland wrote in a statement: “Police have commenced a murder investigation following the death of child in the Brompton Park area of north Belfast this evening (Tuesday, July 27) and made one arrest in relation to this.

       “The investigation is at an early stage and further information will be provided in due course.”

       The Northern Ambulance Service (NIAS) said two emergency crews and a rapid response paramedic were dispatched to the scene.

       Following initial treatment and assessment, two patients were taken to hospital.

       Nichola Mallon, a SDLP Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly, described the reports as “highly distressing”.

       She said: “It is important that the PSNI are given the space and full co-operation to fully investigate this terrible incident.

       “The SDLP will continue to liaise with police, those affected and the community on the ground as the situation unfolds.

       “Our thoughts are with the wider family and we want to thank those residents who assisted the police at the scene tonight.”
