PETALING JAYA: The policy paper and proposed amendments to the law to criminalise stalking are on track to be presented to the Cabinet next month, says Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

In confirming this, the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) also described the government’s commitment to make stalking an offence as “solid”.

“Another engagement session with the working committee will first be held before the policy paper and proposed amendments are tabled to the Cabinet.

“On Nov 2, an engagement session was organised by the legal affairs division of the Prime Minister’s Department together with relevant stakeholders including the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, police, Attorney General’s Chambers, Bar Council, academics, All Women’s Action Society, Sabah Women’s Action-Resource Group, Women’s Aid Organisation and affected victims,” she added.

As per previous decisions, she said the proposed policy paper would be tabled in Parliament after its approval from the Cabinet.“I am confident the amendments will be well received by other MPs as this law has a positive impact on the well-being of the community,” said Mas Ermieyati.

Yesterday, The Star had a frontpage story on advocates renewing their calls for the government to urgently amend the law.
