Effective immediately, masks are required for indoor high school sports in Illinois regardless of a person’s vaccination status.
After Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued a statewide mask mandate for schools on Wednesday, the Illinois High School Association announced the directive applies to student-athletes, coaches, officials, other personnel and spectators for indoor fall sports as well as any other sports conducting indoor workouts.
There are no additional restrictions to high school sports at this time.
The governor’s move comes amid an increase in COVID-19 cases both in Illinois and nationwide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended last week that everyone wear masks in schools.
“Today’s announcement will not deter us from our mission of safely offering high school student-athletes in Illinois the opportunity to participate in sports and activities,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said in a news release.
