Police in northwest suburban Elk Grove Village said they fatally shot a man Friday while responding to a call reporting a man with a knife.
Deputy Chief of Police Christopher Torres said the shooting occurred at about 4:30 p.m. when a group of officers responded to a call from a residence on the 200 block of Fern Drive and encountered a man leaving the home with a knife.

“A male subject exited the residence in possession of a knife,” Torres said. “This person confronted officers away from the home in a nearby yard. During this confrontation the subject was shot.”
The man was taken to Alexian Brothers Hospital and later pronounced dead, Torres said.Torres said the man lived in village, but provided no other details about the man’s identity.

Police were previously called to the residence from a caller inside the home, Torres added.
The officers were taken to a local hospital for observation and would be put on administrative duties, Torres said.
Torres said a criminal investigation and an investigation of the officer involved shooting were underway. There was no continued threat to public safety, he said.
