Rishi Sunak rages at Keir Starmer over Labour U-turn
Last night an embargoed press release dropped from a campaign group with a blaring top line: "Express readers are calling time on the government as 55 percent want change at the next election".
The findings were part of a survey by the polling company Focaldata on behalf of Best for Britain asked 24,954 adults the question "Thinking about the UK, is it time for a change of Government, or do you think the current one should stay in the next General Election?"
For keen readers, the name "Best for Britain" will set off a few alarm bells. Not surprising because this was one of the rabidly furious Remoaner groups set up in 2017 to stop Brexit. It seems that they have not gone away.
The name - along with other leftwing organisations like Stop the War Coalition of Black Lives Matter - is deceptively positive with a hidden agenda behind it.
At the time of its creation, it should have been called "Best for the EU and its fanatical supporters" but that probably did not have the same ring to it.

Since 2021, Best for Britain has decided not to focus on rejoining the EU (although that might change with a Keir Starmer Labour government) but instead on the vague notion of "changing politics for the better".
To this end, they have promoted a change in the electoral system to proportional representation and openly supported "progressive parties" (which means parties on the left. In fact, they held a huge reception at the Labour conference last October. And, of course, they are anti-Tory.)
So it is not surprising that they should come up with a survey showing vast support for a change of government - every poll for more than two years has said that now.
What was interesting was the focus on Express readers - without doubt an attack on the people who made Brexit happen as well as the Tories.
But again, from the correspondence and comments we receive, it is not surprising that 55 percent of Express readers may want a change. The question is what change?

Most readers of each paper tell @BestForBritain poll they want a change of government - although the "change" they want will vary

It is worth noting that Express readers represent one of the smallest samples in this survey which does not explain how or whether it was an attempt at getting a representative sample of our readership.
Express readers were also the second least likely to want a change of government just behind Daily Mail readers, but you would not have seen that in Best for Britain's slightly misleading press release.
But the fact is that "change" for Express readers is going to be very different to the 78 percent of Guardian readers or 71 percent of i newspaper readers who it might reasonably be expected mostly want a Labour government.
What the vague question in the survey fails to dig down on is what change is wanted or even if Express readers and others would not vote Conservative when the election comes.
If they had been asked, it is reasonable to suggest that "change" for Express readers could involve Nigel Farage being involved in a government or even more likely a new Tory leader and probably a wish to have Boris Johnson back.
None of this throws any doubt that Express readers will mostly vote Conservative as they have done in previous elections even with Rishi Sunak in charge.
In fact given a direct choice between what is probably Best for Britain's preferred option of a Starmer led woke, pro-EU, pro-open borders leftwing Labour government or sticking with Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives, I suspect the majority of that 55 percent would pick Sunak and the Tories.

Some may say Best for Britain is a campaign group and campaign groups will use statistics to bolster their case. But this is a campaign group which rather hypocritically derides "lazy political point scoring".
The author Mark Twain is said to have coined the phrase: "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics."
Best for Britain appears to be set on proving him right.
