Coronavirus Update: Canada opens border to vaccinated Americans

       Canada welcomes back fully vaccinated American citizens and permanent residents The United States confirmed more than 100,000 new daily infections – a high that has not been reached since the winter surge So many Canadians have gained unwanted weight during the pandemic. Now, medical experts and advocates say it’s an opportunity to get a new perspective on our bodies In the past seven days, 6,813 cases were reported, up 37 per cent from the previous seven days. There were 74 deaths announced, up 42 per cent over the same period. At least 403 people are being treated in hospitals and 1,401,811 others are considered recovered.

       Canada’s inoculation rate is 8th among countries with a population of one million or more people.

       Protesters march against France's new COVID-19 health bill on Saturday in Paris. The new health bill makes inoculation against COVID-19 compulsory for health and medical staff, firefighters, and certain army personnel. The health pass – either a negative test, vaccination certificate or certificate of recovery from COVID-19 – began to be enforced in July in places of culture of more than 50 people and has been extended to include cafés, restaurants and intercity trains and planes. The newly adopted COVID-19 health pass law drew crowds of demonstrators in more than 180 cities across France.

       Coronavirus in Canada The Alberta NDP is calling for a public inquiry in to the United Conservative government’s handling of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ontario is reporting 423 new COVID-19 infections today – the highest daily case count since mid-June. Canada is now open to Americans who are fully vaccinated as of midnight Sunday night.

       To enter, American citizens and permanent residents will have to check off a few boxes – fully vaccinated, proof of a negative molecular test, proof of vaccination uploaded into the ArriveCAN app or online web portal. Delays are expected at the land border and airports owing to passengers not having all required information. The U.S. government said last week it is exploring whether to require discretionary visitors to be fully vaccinated when the time comes to ease restrictions. Pandemic pounds: Has the pandemic shifted our body weight paradigms in a way that is not mired in stigma and bias?

       Olympics: Canada’s cautious approach to the COVID-19 pandemic made training and competing difficult for its Olympic hopefuls, but they pushed through pandemic challenges to the podium in Tokyo.

       Coronavirus around the world In the U.S., the rising case counts and low vaccination rates tell a grim story: Cases bottomed out in June, averaging about 11,000 a day, but six weeks later, the daily case tally has hit 107,143. Florida is the epicentre of the United States’ current Delta variant COVID-19 surge, yet 40 per cent of the population still are not vaccinated. As the Tokyo Games end, the infection numbers from inside the Olympic “bubble” remain relatively low. France had a fourth consecutive weekend of demonstrations Saturday and Sunday in protest of President Emmanuel Macron’s legislation for mandatory vaccines for health care workers and vaccine passports. In Thailand, protests over the weekend turned violent as riot police fired water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets to repel a crowd of several hundred young demonstrators against the Prime Minister’s handling of the coronavirus crisis. Coronavirus and business France is adopting a vaccine passport system and New York City plans to require people to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination before they can dine indoors, see shows or go to gyms.

       Now, in Canada, the country’s large business lobbies are supporting digital vaccination certificates, saying they would help to prevent a resurgence of financially disastrous lockdowns by enabling those with low risk to participate in events, move freely and go about their daily lives. Also today: Now that we’re open to location-flexible work, is it time to revisit the four-day work week as well?

       And: A return to the office has become more viable for white-collar workers, but the pandemic has shifted preferences for remote work for some, including lawyers.
