Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman has said a major reform championed by her has significantly cut a controversial category of immigration.

Recent changes significantly limiting an influx of foreign students’ family members have slashed numbers, according to new data.

The number of dependents has fallen by a whopping 80%, dropping from 32,900 in the first quarter of 2023 to just 6,700 in the first quarter of 2024.

The number of foreign student applications has also fallen by 15%, from 39,900 to 35,000 this year.

In 2023 Mr Sunak introduced new curbs on foreign students allowed to bring in family members, limiting the privilege to only those conducting PhD research.

Students can also no longer switch their visa before completing their university degree, resulting in a crackdown on those using a university degree merely as a method to get work in the UK.

At the time, the Government promised that the changes would cut the record-high net migration numbers by 300,000, down from 745,000.

James Cleverly has championed the positive migration news, telling The Telegraph: “Ever-spiralling numbers were eroding the British people’s confidence in our immigration system, burdening public services and suppressing wages.

“When I promised to deliver the largest-ever cut in legal migration, I knew we must also work to show the impact of our action as soon as practically possible.

“This data shows a significant fall in numbers on the first of our measures to take effect whilst underlining why necessary action was taken to cut unsustainable numbers of care worker dependants.

“This does not mark the end of the road in our plan to cut migration, there is more still to come. Over the coming months, we will continue to show the pace of our progress as we deliver the control the public rightly expect.”

Suella Braverman, Mr Cleverly’s predecessor as Home Secretary, said the fall shows “good progress on reducing the number of student dependent visas”.

She said: “I delivered these changes in May 2023 because we needed to clamp down on the exponential rise in foreign students bringing spouses and children into the UK. We can see the benefits now.”

However she warned that the Government should have gone further in reducing immigration when she was in office, and if it had “would be turning the tide on record migration now”.

The news comes amid a good week for the Government on immigration, which has deported its first-ever migrant to Rwanda as well as claimed that the deportation plan is working because migrants are fleeing from Britain to Ireland.
