GEORGE TOWN: For some students, art is the best way to showcase their love for the country.
Noor Syaza Wardina,12, drew a painting featuring frontliners who work tirelessly in Malaysia’s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I have drawn an army personnel, a doctor, a nurse and a policeman to convey my appreciation for their sacrifices. I also put in this year’s National Day theme, which is Malaysia Prihatin (Malaysia Cares).”
She took just one day to get it done.
“I love colouring when I am free,” she said.
Vicctoorria Clement’s art piece featured Mother Earth donning a face mask.
In the background of her painting was the “Sayangi Malaysiaku” logo and a Jalur Gemilang.
“Our world is affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and I’ve decided to put on a mask for Mother Earth to keep her protected too.
“I hope that the virus can be contained soon and that humankind can be safe and healthy,” said the 13-year-old.
She said that drawing was her hobby, so she was excited to show her love for Malaysia through art.
“It took me about an hour to draw and around 30 minutes to paint the picture,” she said.
They were among the participants of a community programme organised by a couple here who hope to inculcate the spirit of patriotism in young people.
Lawyer S. Vimala, 40, said 17 children, aged between four and 13, took part in the activity.
“My husband C. Vimalan, who is a freelance tutor, has been giving out rations to the poor families here since the first movement control order was implemented last year.
“About a week ago, we decided to call the parents to inform them about the programme and asked if their children were interested in taking part.
“They were only required to draw and colour their artwork with colour pencil,” she said.
Due to the rise in Covid-19 cases, she said that some parents were told to send their children’s artwork via WhatsApp.
“We have prepared some gifts for the participants, which include masks, story books, stationery items, Malaysian flags, keychains and Vitamin C supplements,” she said.
Vimala said they would also be sending goodie bags to several welfare homes in Penang.
