The 32-year-old was jailed for life with a minimum of 29 years behind bars after she was convicted of murdering Arthur at her home in Solihull, West Midlands. His father, Thomas Hughes, was jailed for 21 years after being convicted of manslaughter for encouraging the killing, including sending a text message to Tustin hours before the fatal assault telling her “just end him”.

       Ms Tustin, from Solihull, West Midlands, tried to blame the injuries suffered by Arthur on himself. She lied to police officers who were responding to a 999 call about what had happened to him.

       Since being sentenced to prison, she is said to be at a high risk of suicide and has been taken to hospital as custody staff became concerned for her health.

       As well as being targeted with salt, Tustin was also threatened with violence by other prisoners in the run-up to her trial.

       At a pre-trial hearing in April 2021, Tustin’s barrister said her client had been receiving “significant and substantial threats”, although it is unclear if she was at the same prison at the time.

       Mary Prior QC said Tustin’s legal team had “done all we can” to urge the prison authorities to “make it plain” to safeguard their client’s health and wellbeing, including writing to the governor.

       She added: “There are weekly conferences and they consist almost entirely of an overwhelmed young lady who is receiving significant and substantial threats and minimal medication."

       The grandfather of Arthur has said that the couple behind his death "must never see the light of day again".

       Speaking to The Sun, he said: “No punishment could ever be enough for this pair.”

       The killing of Arthur Labinjo-Hughes will be the subject of a national review to protect other children from such evil crimes, the government says.

       Nadhim Zahawi said: "We will not rest until we have the answers we need."

       The Education Secretary announced "a single, national review of Arthur's death to identify where we must learn from this terrible case".

       Mr Zahawi has also asked inspectors in social care, health, police and probation to urgently investigate the safeguarding agencies in Solihull to whom Arthur was known.

       He said: "Arthur's murder has shocked and appalled the nation. I am deeply distressed by this awful case and the senseless pain inflicted on this poor boy, who has been robbed of the chance to live his life."

       Mr Zahawi is expected to make a statement to the House of Commons on Arthur's case on Monday.

       The Department for Education said over the next few days it would work with the national panel and the Solihull partnership to agree on a timeline for publication of the national review.

       It will also agree on the full scope of the Joint Targeted Area Inspection with the agencies involved, it said.

       This "upgrades" the existing local review, launched shortly after Arthur's death in June 2020, a statement from the Department for Education said.

       Meanwhile, the jail terms of Arthur's killers will be reviewed to "determine whether they were too low", the Attorney General's Office said.
