The Culture Secretary said everyone has said things they wish they could have “expressed differently” as she tried to divert attention away from David Lammy’s blistering verbal assault.

In an article in Time magazine in 2018, Mr Lammy wrote: "Trump is not only a woman-hating, neo-Nazi-sympathising sociopath.

"He is also a profound threat to the international order that has been the foundation of Western progress for so long.

"It is because I cherish and champion those values that this Friday, I will march with London against Donald Trump."

But with the new Labour government seeking to forge closer ties with Mr Trump, who is the favourite to win November’s US election, Ms Nandy was left squirming as she sought to move on from the remarks.

“All of us will have said things, including me, that when we look back on them we think we could have expressed that differently,” she told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.”

Mr Lammy’s previous remarks will be seen as awkward for Sir Keir Starmer, particularly as the former President recovers from a shocking assassination attempt at the weekend.

Ms Nandy added: “I am really pleased that yesterday I was on the plane to Berlin with Keir Starmer and he was keen to speak to president Trump and he did so as soon as we touched down to reiterate our sympathies and our condolences to the attack but also our firm opposition to any kind of violence in politics and our utter condemnation of it.

“I think as a new government we have real responsibility to reset the rhetoric of the last decade and a half and to show that leadership because if we don’t model that behaviour I don’t know how we can expect the public to do the same.

“It is something I know our new Foreign Secretary takes very seriously, I take very seriously, the Prime Minister takes very seriously and I think you will see a very different tone from this government.”

Sir Keir has called November’s vote “a matter for the American people” and pledged to work with “whoever they choose as their president”.

But more than half of his cabinet, including home secretary Yvette Cooper, previously criticised Mr Trump.

The year after his Time magazine attack Mr Lammy he called Mr Trump a “serial liar and a cheat” who was also “deluded, dishonest, xenophobic, narcissistic and . . . no friend of Britain”.

In January 2021 he said that “Joe Biden replacing Donald Trump as president fills me with joy”.

Mr Lammy has more recently tempered his language, saying in May: “Whoever is in the White House or Number 10 in a big election year, we must work together.”

Deputy prime minister Angela Rayner said in 2021 after the Capitol Hill riots that Conservative ministers were “spineless” and “toadying” for failing to call out Trump’s “lies”.

She added: “The violence that Donald Trump has unleashed is terrifying, and the Republicans who stood by him have blood on their hands.”

Ms Cooper joined a women’s march in 2017 to “take a stand against Donald Trump”, saying: “We are marching because the most powerful man in the [US] thinks it’s OK to grab women ‘by the pussy’.”

Ed Miliband, the energy secretary, wrote in 2016: “The idea that we have shared values with a racist, misogynistic, self-confessed groper beggars belief.”

A year later he called Mr Trump an “absolute moron”, and in 2018 castigated “his racist attacks . . . his lies, his admiration for dictators”.

Other now-cabinet ministers including health secretary Wes Streeting, culture secretary Lisa Nandy, work and pensions secretary Liz Kendall, Northern Ireland secretary Hilary Benn and environment secretary Steve Reed have all written stinging criticisms about Mr Trump.
