The former US president has asked a court to block a release of material related to the House investigation into the attack on the Capitol in January, the Guardian reports. The National Archives, a federal agency that holds presidential files, was set to begin giving congressional investigators hundreds of pages of documents and other material including video clips.

However, Trump reportedly aimed to keep all of these a secret.

On Thursday, a federal appeals court temporarily halted the release.

The DC circuit court randomly assigns three judges to a panel to consider the appeal.

The three judges who will hear Trump’s appeal following this decision are Patricia Millett, Robert Wilkins and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

In January rioters roamed around the Capitol, smashing some windows and posing for photographs, before being forced out by police reinforcements.

Five people died, including one after being shot by a Capital police officer inside Congress with the other three killed by unspecified “medical emergencies”.

Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi were among those who were rushed out of the building in astonishing scenes from the US capital.

The riots came after President Trump called on Mike Pence to nullify the election and block Mr Biden's certification.

Muriel Bowser, Mayor of Washington DC, joined Chief Contee at the presser and criticised the protesters and Mr Trump.

She said, opening the conference: “I know that I speak for all of us when I say that we saw an unprecedented attack on our American democracy incited by the United States President, and he must be held accountable.

“His constant and divisive rhetoric led to the abhorrent actions we saw today.

And sadly it led to a loss of life that will forever stain what could have been, and what should have been, a peaceful transfer of power.

"Again, he must be held accountable.”

After the protesters broke into the Capitol building, Mr Trump posted a video where he urged supporters to “go home”, but also repeated the election was “stolen” by Democrats.

Around 700 people have been arrested for their involvement in the attack.
